Fay and I

Okay ~ Just spent the last full week of my life in sunny, sorry, I meant Fay Florida. I worked very hard helping my BFF get her kids moved into their college digs. In the rain. The relentless, never ending 24/7 torrential rain in central Florida. Got home to PA late last night and I am wondering if I will ever recover from the experience. I was looking forward to a bit of fine dining and some new and exciting local good eats. After all, I gave up a week of my life because I am a good friend, right? We ate at the same 3 or 4 restaurants EVERY day to avoid traveling and getting dressed up. I am going to need a good home cooked dinner tomorrow night (way too tired tonight!) I am in the mood for seafood and pasta. I would love some spicy ideas. Please help me!

The Cooking Loft? Anne Burrell?

So, I wandered over to FN because my Tivo did not pick up Ann's show for two Sundays. What happened to her show?

While I was looking around, I saw an ad for a new show called The Cooking Loft. It kind of looked promising. Has anyone else seen the ad?

A Chef and a Spy! That got my attention this morning. What do you think about that?

Back to Table Manners, Again!

From the restaurant ordering thread, I started thinking about something I have been seeing more and more. I was raised not to pick up my knife and fork until everyone at the table has been served, whether at home or in a restaurant.

It really bothers me to see people "dig in" as soon as their plate is put in front of them. We went to dinner last week with a group of people. The minute the one person's plate was down he was shoveling his food with his elbow and arm on the table. I was beside myself!

Do you think I am out of line in my thinking?

Time is Everything

When searching the threads to see new comments posted, it would make sense to see the time of the last post to a thread so we would not have to scroll through to see the last comment, which we may have already seen, more than once. I can't keep count of the number of posts on each thread. I would rather spend my time seeing what is new. Life is short, you know?

White Pepper

I have a couple of recipes that call for white pepper. I understand the whole pepper color thing. But, white pepper tastes terrible to me and I don't like the way it smells. Am I alone here? Would you use the white pepper or stick with black pepper? Is there a substitute you recommend?

A Three Hour Tour.............

So you end up on a deserted island. BUT, you have a backpack and it is filled with? What will you make and how will you make it? (Yeah, I know I should watch FN and not TVLand)

Potent Potables

DH is a musician (by hobby) and we are having his music peeps over for a BBQ next weekend. I would like to come up with a unique cocktail, preferably one I can serve in martini glasses (because they are SO cool). I will be serving said cocktail with appetizers. Grilled shrimp cocktail, seared scallops with spicy mango puree, tenderloin carpaccio with fresh lemon, olive oil and shaved parm, vegetable crudite with hummus and a basil buttermilk dip. Oh so talented and creative SEers, help me out!

Orlando in August? Are You Kidding Me?

Most of my SE buds know I am from New England. For those that don't, izatryt & hot weather? Not such a good idea! So, I have been suckered into helping my dear friend get her 2 kids settled into UCF next month. Yes, I know I have the big "S" tattooed on the forehead! PLEASE give me your recs for some fine dining (the very least I deserve) and some ideas to pass on to the kids to help them get some good and healthy eats as they adapt to college life away from home. Hopefully, they won't have to blow their budget the first week. I am bringing enough tissues to deal with their mother!! But a girl's gotta eat!

With that said, they are being supplied with all of the tools to cook at home as well. What markets are close to school? They can both cook to some degree.

What's on your "Bucket List"?

What food journey is on your list? For me, it would be a tour through Italy of the foods and wines from all the regions. I want to experience the local cultures and taste the foods they painstakingly prepare. I want to eat where they eat and shop where they shop for their own kitchens. I want to savor every drop of the wines they make. I want to meet the people who make those delightful wines and when I leave Italy, I will leave with my mind full of the most incredible memories that will last until bucket time!

They're Giving Guy Another Show?

I think what we are all saying is: Give us good quality viewing with substance on FN. It has turned 180 degrees from the original programming where we were captivated by the cooking experience, not the schtick and half nakedness of today's programming. For those of us there from the beginning, Guy getting another show is a disappointment in a long line of FN disappointments. They USED to know how to produce shows with truly talented chefs!

Friday Night Drinks

How timely! I just opened a Chateau St. Jean Fume Blanc. It was a gift from some folks we had to dinner last week. They told me not to open for dinner while they were here. Okay, I will enjoy it Friday night I said. So, here I sit all alone waiting for DH to return from a hard day at work. Poor guy. He is not going to get his fair share!! I know it isn't a ta da wine, but it is tasty and I like it.

They're Giving Guy Another Show?

Let me add that I was an art critic for a dozen years, and an art history teacher for a number of years as well, so if anyone is clear on the concept of quality, taste making and what constitutes a genuine sense of standards based on principle, dear Pumpkin Bear, it is I. That said, over many years I have also come to recognize that authentic, regional, artisinal and close-to-the-source expressions of culture, whether that expression be in the form of art, food, writing, music, etc, are the ones worth exploring in some depth.

As Sassy notes, there is history available in these regional choices and we need a guide who can show us what is often overlooked in the alley in favor of the so-called creme de la creme served in the great hall. Bourdain for example makes a particular note of the peasant foods which often transform in a variety of ways to something truly soul satisfying, regardless of alleged pedigree. For some of us, perhaps, Guy reveals this sort of material in ways we would not otherwise see. I can not speak to the Neelys or Paula Dean as I do not watch those shows. Emeril has never been my cup of tea either - just a personal thing.

As my 99 year old grandmother from the Eastern Shore of Maryland likes to say: Difference of opinion makes horse races! When one dissuades people from exploring their passions - even passions which may be in the formative stage - it is a disservice to society as a whole which needs hopes and dreams in order to grow and change. Discussion, discourse, a lively exchange of ideas - these are all good. Being mean for the sake of a momentary blast of schadenfreude just cheapens us all.

And a cheap date doesn't get good entertainment from a network exec! LOL.

I like Guy. I don't know about his food, because his recipes are usually too complicated for my meager skills, but I like to watch him. At least he's somewhat lively. He's not Mario, of course, but most of Mario's food is beyond me, too.

@pointy-- several of the old shows we know and love are still shown on Fine Living. Molto Mario, Wolfgang Puck, Iron Chef Japan, Emeril Live, and a couple of others are on during the mid-day. Set your TiVo!!!

They're Giving Guy Another Show?

I totally agree with you, Tobey! SOME of you bloggers are vicious! Lighten up! Somebody out there likes Guy, the Neeleys, Aaron and Paula. Like it or not, there is a huge audience for "Down home" cooking. The majority of Americans still eat that way, no matter how many times they're told that too much is no good for you. We do have to respect that the types of foods that they prepare have been popular, and was American history itself for many years due to not just taste, but the cost (not expensive), and the many variations in preparation. Americans love them because they're all able to put their own tastes, styles and variations to the same dishes that have been cooked for years. What I do agree with some of the bloggers about is being able to do without some of the Neeley's cooing and playing with each other. Although I respect their cooking and they are personable,The other stuff is getting stale.

Oh my God--everyone has to click on that Peanut Butter Frosting and Chocolate-Peanut Butter Glaze
from Sky High: Irresistable Triple-Layer Cakes
http://smittenkitchen.com/2008/08/chocolate-peanut-butter-cake/ posted by Jerzee Tomato! That looks so rich, you think you could hardly manage one bite but could probably eat the entire thing in a fit of ecstasy!

On topic, no plans, most of my friends are either away or getting kids ready for school. I'm always sad to see the summer go!
